The Master of Public Health Student Association (MaPHSA) at the University of Southern California (USC) is a student-run organization that supports resident and online Master of Public Health (MPH) students academically, professionally, and socially.
Mission
MaPHSA’s mission is to promote academic excellence and professional development among USC MPH students, build a strong community among USC MPH students and alumni & support public health initiatives in the local community and beyond

Online President: Elizabeth Chen
MPH, Biostatistics-Epidemiology
Elizabeth is a second-year Master of Public Health student at USC, passionate about epidemiology research and medicine. She currently works in the Glomerular Disease Center at Stanford and coordinates several clinical trials for patients with rare kidney diseases. Serving as the MaPHSA online president, Elizabeth works very closely with Juan (resident president) and our faculty advisor to oversee the MaPHSA board and its operations by preparing the agenda and leading bi-weekly meetings. On some occasions, Elizabeth likes to participate in races with her friends to obtain medals, race gear, and hot chocolate.
Fun Fact: Elizabeth can play six instruments – classically trained in piano for nearly 20 years, handbells for 10 years, guitar, violin, cajon, and drums.

Director of Finance: Sarah Bai
MPH, Health Policy and Services
Sarah is a progressive degree BS/MPH student at USC, passionate about creating data-informed decisions and change through policy, healthcare design and sound science. During her time at USC, she co-founded Navigators for Health, a social prescribing initiative at community health events and fairs across Los Angeles, which she hopes to intertwine into her professional career. She is currently a research assistant for Project ADAPT examining effects of discrimination on polysubstance use and TAs in Rossier’s Office of Professional Learning. As MaPHSA’s Director of Finance, she aims to optimize resource allocation and support initiatives that enhance student engagement and professional development.
Fun Fact: When she studied abroad at Oxford University during her undergrad at SC, she discovered her love for Heinz baked beans.

Secretary: Suhail Samidon
MPH, Biostatistics-Epidemiology
Suhail is a second-year Master of Public Health at USC, passionate about infectious disease epidemiology and medicine. He currently interns at Wellness Equity Alliance, where he assists with street medicine operations, STI reporting, and harm reduction initiatives. As Secretary, Suhail is responsible for documenting the MaPHSA agenda and helping implement events. He also prepares the monthly newsletter. When he’s not doing public health, he practices for Triathlon and prepares to take the MCAT in April. He aspires to become a chief medical officer to empower others to take the best possible actions for their health and advocate for vulnerable populations.
Fun Fact: Suhail completed his first Ironman 70.3 last year: STRAVA

Director of Events: Alexus Espino
MPH,
Alexus is a dedicated second-year Master of Public Health student at the University of Southern California, with a passion for enhancing health outcomes in underserved and vulnerable communities. With experience spanning emergency services, program development, and public health research, Alexus leverages her diverse skill set to address complex public health challenges. As the Director of Events (Resident), Alexus fosters community through professional, academic and social events. In her free time, she enjoys playing sports, making ginger shots, traveling, and reading.
Fun Fact: I got frostnip in 2018.

Online Director of Events : Joan Pham
MPH, Community Health Promotion
Joan is a second year Master of Public Health Student at USC and a practicing registered dental hygienist in Southern California. She is passionate about the oral-systemic link and improving oral health literacy and access among vulnerable communities, such as the first-generation Vietnamese immigrants and refugees. As the director of events (online), Joan aims to bring the online student community together through virtual events and in-person events to build greater connections and support. In her free time, she enjoys indoor cycling, caring for her new (and very first) stray kitten, and eating delicious foods and desserts. Joan’s ultimate goal is to continue her work as a healthcare provider, become a clinical professor, and start an oral health non-profit program.
Fun Fact: Joan has a younger sister named Joann.

Director of Community Outreach:
Scarlett Mar, MPH, Community Health
Promotion
Scarlett is in USC’s one-year MPH track and is concentrating in Community Health Promotion. Prior to starting her MPH, she worked as a pediatric medical assistant, conducted research investigating the role of racial stereotypes and bicultural identity on working memory in Asian Americans, and mentored disadvantaged youth. Her various clinical, research, and mentorship experiences, along with her personal first-generation low-income background, have guided her interests in health equity and justice, preventative medicine, and community mentorship. As Director of Community Outreach, Scarlett looks forward to bridging the social and physical gaps between resident students, online students, and our local community through various service events.
Fun Fact: Scarlett has 2 one-eyed cats named Pirate and Toast!

Director of Student Relations:
Jaylee Cortes, MPH, Community Health
Promotion
Jaylee is a second-year MPH student on the Community Health Promotion track. Before starting her graduate degree at USC, she received her Bachelor of Science in Organizational Communications at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. She is currently a Youth Ambassador for USC’s Institue on Inequalities in Global Health and an intern for PERIOD. Jaylee keeps herself busy working at a boba shop, babysitting, dogsitting, and managing social media accounts. After graduation, Jaylee hopes to start a career within a non-profit in the sexual and reproductive health and rights atmosphere and focus on bringing comprehensive sexuality education to the Hispanic community. Jaylee will be graduating in August 2025.
Fun Fact: Jaylee has a dog named Chico who went viral on Twitter.

Online Director of Student Relations:
Jacky Rosas Torres, MPH, Community
Health Promotion
Jacky is a first-generation, low-income Latina and a second-year MPH student. She earned her B.S. in Healthcare Management and Policy with a minor in Disability Studies from Georgetown University’s School of Health. She is currently interning at Steady LLC, where she collaborates with the CEO to implement strategic initiatives that equip treatment providers with Steady’s evidence-based, culturally responsive framework—advancing equitable care for minoritized communities. She is also interning with the Emergency Management Department at CCALAC, where she is gaining hands-on experience in crisis response and healthcare preparedness. With aspirations to break into hospital administration, she hopes to drive equitable and community-centered healthcare solutions.
Fun Fact: Jacky dreams of continuing her career as a mariachi violinist, honoring her cultural roots through music.

GSG Senator: Emily Kumagai
MPH, Community Health Promotion
Emily is a second-year Master of Public Health at USC, whose professional passions lie in cancer research, preventive health, and health equity. A quadrilingual, she works as a Korean Cancer Care Companion (patient navigator) and conducts international cancer research. Emily serves as the bridge of communication between the administrative board and MAPHSA, and coordinates the mentorship program/events. In her free time, she does freelance content creating and a home bakery. Her ultimate goal is to become a professor and to continue her international cancer research.
Fun Fact: I’ve won state beauty pageants and placed top 5 at nationals.
